Chapter Forty-One

Shit.

Xavier looked out from the backseat at the warehouse ahead, across the dirt ground, past the stacks of abandoned tyres and stripped-down cars.

It had been almost a month since they’d last been there – back when Kane had agreed to meet him there in exchange for his sister Arana’s heart. But it had all been a ploy on Kane’s part. Every time they’d been on the cusp of getting the upper hand, Kane had pulled something else out of the bag like fucking Mary Poppins. It had gone as wrong as everything since.

And now this.

He should have known Kane wouldn’t let him off the hook. Should have known Kane would only get to him when he was ready. Clearly Kane and the others had chosen to ignore his warning about the explosives. Clearly Kane had chosen to take his chances instead. They deserved to die for their arrogance, and Kane more than any of them.

That would stick it to Throme: the reason he was in that situation in the first place.

Heart pounding, Xavier watched Kane exit the car. Heard the boot open and then slam shut behind him. He watched the vampire carry his bow and a single arrow as he sauntered across the rough terrain towards the warehouse.

At least it was going to be quick if that was what Kane had planned.

One of the vampires who had flanked him in the back of the car tugged Xavier out, the other joining them. But Xavier was not going to fight – not this time. This time he’d walk to the gallows with his head held high. He wasn’t going to give Malloy the satisfaction of anything else.

But as Kane shoved open the warehouse doors, Xavier felt a quiver in his thighs, a lack of stability in his feet. A cool bead of perspiration trickled down his forehead. He felt clammy. He felt cold. He felt lightheaded. Especially as he stared at the post twenty feet away.

The post Arana Malloy had been tied to that night.

Xavier looked to Kane leaning against the ten-by-ten-foot crate ahead as Kane’s henchmen finished securing his arms, wrenched behind his back, to the post.

As they promptly exited the warehouse, Kane strolled forward until he eventually drew level.

Xavier stared into the vampire’s piercing navy eyes, but he couldn’t sustain Kane’s glare for long. Couldn’t hold it any longer than the last time he’d been there with him. The night Kane had revealed he knew everything about the TSCD’s involvement in Arana’s murder.

And this was how it was all going to end: a single shot. It almost felt too tame.

‘I’m not going to remove your gag,’ Kane said, his voice as steady and cold as his gaze. ‘I’m sure there’s a lot you’ll want to say to me. I’m confident it would eventually involve you begging for your life, just like you did last time. But I don’t want to hear it. I don’t want to hear anything from you. I just want you to know how it feels.
